Final Mile

Oh what a journey this has been!  On March 1, I challenged myself (in front of the entire school) to walk a mile for each student in our building.  It was meant to motivate them, to inspire them, to let them know that if I could accomplish this goal (being seriously out of shape), they could do ANYTHING!  But the real reason behind this goal is my sister, Kerri.

Today, I will walk my final mile.  A mile has been walked for our beloved priest, Fr. Robert,  each student in our building and a mile for the entire faculty and staff of our school, and today, I will walk a mile for Kerri. I don't think I was ready for the emotions I would feel as I got closer and closer to this day.  Grief is a funny thing.  It sneaks up on you when you least expect it.  There I would be, on my early morning walk, listening to a pod cast or my favorite Itunes playlist and suddenly BAM!  The thought of finishing this task, accomplishing this goal, would pour over me and grief would take over.

In those moments, however, I would think of my students.  I would think of the cheers when I call their name in the mornings and say, "Today, I walked a mile for YOU!"  I would think of the kids who walked along with me when I made it outside during recess.  I would think of the conversations I had with students when they were struggling, "I'm going to walk for you tomorrow and while I'm walking I will pray that God gives you strength to keep pushing through this challenge."  It was after those thoughts that the grief would subside, and I would remember that this purpose was much greater than I'd initially set out for it to be.

So today, I walk a mile for my sister.  As I walk, I will remember all the wonderful memories I have with her, and I will pray that she is walking right along with me.  After, I will invite my students to join me for one last mile for the entire St. Patrick School community.  I hope they will always know that no matter if they are happy or sad, their days are good or bad, this community stands with them on their journey.  What a powerful thing!

Teacher Appreciation Week

This week, I had the opportunity to do what I LOVE and jump back into the classroom.  It was so much fun to get to teach again, to watch my students learn and grow and challenge themselves.  I loved every second of it...but was reminded of just how hard teaching can be. It's exhausting!

Thank you to the teachers for allowing me to come in!

Ms. Monaghan's Miles

This is why get up early!  My morning walks have become something I look forward to each day.  The peaceful, calm time of my day where I can reflect on the week, think about the day ahead, and pray for each one of my students.

Only 6 more to go....
